ITANAGAR: A government school teacher was arrested for allegedly peddling drugs from the Pakam-III area near Aalo in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Siang district, police said on Tuesday.
The arrest was made under Operation Dawn 2.0 by the district’s anti-drug squad, based on specific intelligence inputs. The operation was led by Aalo police station officer-in-charge Yomken Riram and his team, informed West Siang superintendent of police (SP) Kardak Riba.
The team conducted multiple raids at suspected locations and eventually raided an ordinary building type (OBT) government quarter, where they detained the suspect, Bili Potom.
Police recovered 8.71 grams of suspected heroin worth approximately Rs 1 lakh in the local market. The contraband was concealed in five tobacco containers. Additionally, three syringes and Rs 13,000 in cash, believed to be drug sale proceeds, were also seized from the premises.
The search and seizure operation was conducted in the presence of executive magistrate Jumkar Karbi and other independent witnesses.
During spot interrogation, the accused confessed to being a drug addict and admitted his involvement in drug peddling for the past two years. He is currently serving as an IT teacher under ISSE (formerly SSA) and has been posted at the Pakam Government Secondary School since his appointment.
A case has been registered against him under Sections 21(b) and 27 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigation is underway.
