BISWANATH CHARIALI: The 10th Barnam Mrinal Sharma National Drama Festival concluded successfully which was going on from January 5 to 7 at the Kamalakanta Natya Samaj Hall in Biswanath Chariali. A total of eight popular theatre groups from Odisha, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Assam staged plays over the three days. The opening play of the first night of the festival was ‘Swikarokti’ by Suhrid Natya Group, Murshidabad, West Bengal followed by ‘Kathphula’ by the organizing group Barnam. Three plays were presented on January 6 including first play, Madhumakshika, Voice Theatre, Guwahati, second play, Satghari, Rangpeeth, Shantipur, West Bengal and the third play, Aichu, Vidya the Living Theatre, Dhemaji. On January 7, another three numbers of plays were staged which included Revati Sevati Au Tibati, Nayika Natya Chetana, Bhubaneswar, Orissa, Khol Do, Orka, Pune, Maharashtra and Eta Nishaar Sangini, Mukha, Barpeta.
In conjunction with the drama festival, a seminar on “Changing Trends in Assamese Drama and the Plays of Pankajjyoti Bhuyan” was organized in Biswanath College of Education. The seminar was attended by playwright Hillol Kumar Pathak, playwright and director Asim Kumar Nath, actress and Senior Professor of THB College Nivedita Bharali and Professor of Biswanath College Balin Bhuyan.
The ‘Kalyan Kumar Barnam Bandhav Award, 2025’ was presented to eminent playwright and director Pankajjyoti Bhuyan on the occasion Barnam President and Biswanath Municipality Chairman Amarjyoti Borthakur at a function hosted by Barnam Secretary Kushal Deka.
An Assamese translation of Nepali play of Ghimire Yuvraj ‘Bimoksha-the Salvation’ done by Sahitya Akademi Translation Award Winner Dr Sanjeev Upadhyay was released by Pankajjyoti Bhuyan on the occasion.
