DOOMDOOMA: Asam Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), Tinsukia District Committee, staged a human chain protest on Thursday on NH-37 near Railway Level crossing gate to Doomdooma river bridge for dilapidated condition of the road for about a year.

The stretch of National Highway No.37, which is now called as Assam Trunk road like before, from Makum to Rupaisiding is in dilapidated condition for about a year much to the inconvenience of the commuters and general public.

As published earlier in this paper, the aforesaid stretch was repaired hurriedly just before Chief Ministers Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma’s visit for land patta distribution at Rupaisiding on February 23, 2024, the condition of the road again deteriorated from bad to worse. Recently, a serious accident took place near Beesakopie tea factory as a student had a fall from his bike while crossing a big pothole on the road and had to be hospitalized in serious condition. It was followed by a series of similar road traffic accidents much to the annoyance of the travelling public.

What is more intriguing is that the condition remain unchanged even after Chief Minister’s second visit to Tinsukia district in connection with inauguration of solar powered street lights on Sudhakantha  Bhupen Hazarika Setu - popularly known as Dholla-Sadiya bridge - on September 5, 2024 as he reportedly declared the release of Rs 22 crore for the purpose.

The State Government’s series of road safety measures in recent past to create public awareness, therefore, turn out to be ludicrous in view of such prevailing road conditions. It poses not only as health hazards to sick people or pregnant women but a denial to human rights as well.
