GOLAGHAT: The members of All Assam Chutiya Students’ Union (AACSU) started a fast-unto-death in Golaghat demanding tribal status and autonomy to the Chutia community.

Ten members of the organization including All Assam Chutiya Students’ Union president Mohen Bora has been participating in the programme, which was held at Trimurti Kshetra near Golaghat District Commissioner’s office.

The organisation threatened to continue with the programme till the government gives its commitment to tribalization. Participating in the programme All Assam Chutia Students’ Union President Mohen Bora said that the present government has been deceiving the Chutiya community. Although it hasn't worked, the current prime minister has stated that action will be made shortly to address the issue of the six ethnic communities becoming more tribalized.

He also warned that if the government did not take any measures in the matter of tribalization then a befitting reply would be given in the upcoming 2026 elections. He also said that in the name of tribalization, politics has been repeatedly done, cheated and the Chutia community Students’ Union never accepted the fraud assurance.  Apart from this, the Chutiyas have also been kept out of the system of autonomy.

Autonomy will have to be given to the Chutiyas within the next six months and termed it unfortunate that the ancient monuments of the historic Chutiya capital have not been preserved even after the country has completed 77 years of independence. “We will be forced to take measures to oust the BJP party from the throne of power in the next 2026 elections without tribalising the Chutia community in the next six months,” he said.

As son of land, the PM, the Tribal Minister, and the CM should answer a question as to why the Chutiyas were left out of tribalization? He claimed that the government must give them the right answer. In addition to president Mohen Bora, general secretary of the organization Raju Chutia, other members Anshuman Saikia, Satyaranjan Hazarika, Surya Hazarika, Lilakanta Chutia, Bhaskar Bora, Jayanta Bora, Dhruv Bora and Lohit Saikia are participating in the fast-unto-death programme.
