Dhekiajuli: The education secretary of the All Sonitpur District Students’ Union (AASU) Shankar Das has strongly opposed the continued closure of New Horizon English School in Sirajuli following the tragic death of a Class VII student Aman Mahato on January 22.
Speaking to the media in Dhekiajuli on Sunday morning, Das extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved family describing the incident as heartbreaking. Aman Mahato, a student of New Horizon English School, reportedly passed away on January 22 allegedly due to physical assault by a teacher during a class session on January 17. The incident has sparked widespread debate, with different sections of society expressing contrasting views on the school’s role in the tragedy.
Das clarified that while AASU demands justice for the deceased student it does not support shutting down the entire institution. He emphasized that the actions of one teacher should not lead to the punishment of the entire school administration. “If the accused teacher is found guilty, he must face strict legal consequences as per the law. However, if he is proven innocent it is up to the judiciary to take appropriate steps. The education of other students should not be disrupted due to this unfortunate incident,” he stated.
The AASU leader also criticized the prolonged closure of the school which has remained shut since January 23 by order of the district administration. He asserted that the Sonitpur District Students’ Union and the Dhekiajuli Local Unit of AASU would not accept the administration’s decision to keep the school non-operational. He stressed that students should not suffer due to an individual’s alleged wrongdoing.
