'Am I A Dacoit Or A Thief ?': Assam CM Lashes Out At Heavy Police Deployment In Silchar

The Assam CM's reaction was reportedly directed at the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Cachar district, who arranged additional police personnel for the Chief Minister's visit.

SILCHAR: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lashed out at a government official for heavy police deployment around him while he was meeting students and the public at Desh Bhakta Tarun Ram Phookan HS School in Silchar on March 18. The video of the incident went viral on social media the following day.

In the video, CM Sarma can be heard saying, “Am I a thief or a dacoit? Why so many police have been deployed around me?” As per reports, the Assam CM's reaction was directed at the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Cachar district, who arranged additional police personnel for the Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, CM Sarma laid the foundation stone for a 50-bed critical care block at SM Dev Civil Hospital in Silchar, marking a significant advancement in the region's healthcare capabilities.

The new facility, which will span 6,335 square meters, is designed as a ground-plus-four-storey structure and will feature essential medical services, including an intensive care unit (ICU), operation theatre, isolation wards, and a pediatric care unit. The estimated cost for this project is Rs 24 crore.

During his visit, CM Sarma also inaugurated the work on a new circuit house in Silchar, stressing that these developments will contribute towards the overall betterment of healthcare and infrastructure in the region. Further, he announced the proposal of a new 200-bed hospital and a flyover to ease traffic congestion in the town.
