DHUBRI: Apart from organizing events like Tree Bihu and Bird Welcome Festival, the Aranya Suraksha Samity, Assam (ASSA), relentlessly working on conservation of indigenous species of fish, brought out a magazine named as ‘Seuj’ (Green) in a simple function at Bilasipara on Thursday. ASSA put up a slogan, ‘Wherever there is open water, let us release fingerlings there.’
The special issue of Seuj focused on fish conservation during the Acharya Training Camp held at Sankardev Sishu and Vidya Niketan in Bilasipara. The magazine was formally released by Secretary of Shishu Shiksha Samiti, Assam, Jagannath Rajbongshi. In his speech, he appreciated the dedicated efforts of the ASSA in conserving biodiversity.
The chief editor of the magazine and General Secretary of ASSA, Dr Haricharan Das, said that the Samity had been running the campaign to raise awareness because despite there being 1,000 wetlands, more than 200 rivers and tributaries, and over 50,000 ponds and canals in Assam, the state still has to import fish from other states. However, if fishing is restricted during the breeding months of June and July, allowing fish to spawn naturally in these water bodies, Assam could become self-sufficient in fish production, Dr Das opined. The event was also attended by Acharya Trainer Manmohan Kalita and Organizing Secretary of ASSA Dhrubaranjan Chakraborty, along with other notable personalities. The magazine includes insightful articles on fish conservation laws, aquatic ecosystems, the necessity of fish sanctuaries, and highlights the importance and role of fish farmers.
