DOOMDOOMA: “There is exaggerated propaganda that the tea industry in Assam is currently facing a crisis. The crisis in the tea industry is the creation of the’ employers’—observed Hitendra Baruah, secretary of the Central Committee and Doomdooma Branch of Assam Chah Karmachari Sangha (ACKS) while delivering the inaugural address of the open meeting of the 78th Foundation Day celebrations of the ACKS on Sunday.
He added, “The contribution of the tea industry to the economy of Assam and the country is undeniable. Especially tea from Assam is highly appreciated in the world market. The workers and labourers contribute immensely to the growth of the tea industry in the state. Unfortunately, the problems faced by them are not properly highlighted in the media.”
He urged the tea workers to unite and speak out to thwart the conspiracy of the employers and assert their rights. He also read out a message from the General Secretary of ACKS, Rishav Kalita.
The 78th foundation day of ACKS was celebrated at Bordubi Tea Estate today in collaboration with Bordubi, Budlabeta, and Phillobari Tea Estate primary units. The open meeting was presided over by the President of the Doomdooma Branch of ACKS, Umananda Dutta.
Delivering the welcome address, the Secretary of the Organizing Committee, Ajit Karmakar, also said that the crisis in the tea industry is the creation of the owners and urged the workers to unite against it.
The open meeting was attended by former President of Tinsukia Zila Xahitya Xabha (TZXX) and social worker Arjun Baruah as keynote speaker. He mentioned the contribution of tea workers in various spheres of national life in Assam and urged the new generation of workers to continue this trend. The Doomdooma Branch of ACKS conferred the title of ‘Somaj Mohiruh’ on him while felicitating him in the meeting.
The open session was also addressed by the President of Satadal Sakha Xahitya Xabha Deben Deka and journalist Abhijit Khataniar as guests of honour.
In the meeting, the Vice-President of the Central Committee of ACKS, Biren Adhyapak, was conferred the title of ‘Sangha Mohiyan’ by the Doomdooma Branch of ACKS. Two former office bearers of the Sangha, Achyut Pujari and Jagdish Ranjan Dutta, were also felicitated in the meeting. In his speech, President Umananda Dutta mentioned the role played by the ACKS in solving various problems of tea workers.
