Assam: Asomi Bhogali Mela gets underway in Dhubri

Three-day Asomi Bhogali Mela got underway at Raja Prabhat Chandra Barua field here in Dhubri with the inauguration by Dhubri District Commissioner, Dibakar Nath.

DHUBRI: Three-day Asomi Bhogali Mela got underway at Raja Prabhat Chandra Barua field here in Dhubri with the inauguration by Dhubri District Commissioner, Dibakar Nath on Friday.

The fair is organized by Dhubri district unit of Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission with 60 Self-Help Groups accommodated in 30 stalls coming from 11 development blocks - Dharmasala, Golakganj, Agomoni, Rupsi, Debitola, Mahamaya, Bilasipara, Birsing Jarua, Nayer-Alga, Jamadarhat and Chapor.

Speaking in the inaugural function held at fair ground, District Commissioner, Dibakar Nath wished all the members of Self-Help Groups a happy Bhogali Bihu and appealed them to use the social media platform to sell their products made by the groups.

“All the members should adopt the skill of sales and marketing as Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission is making all out efforts to improve their sales and marketing potentialities along with upgrading and value addition of their products”, Nath added.

Chairman of the Dhubri Municipal Board, Dr. Debamoy Sanyal too spoke on the strengthening and improving marketing skills in order to become self reliant.

Dhubri District Commissioner, Dibakar Nath also visited all stalls and encouraged the women entrepreneurs.

Talking to The Sentinel, president of Self-Help Group of Debitola Development Block, Tapoti Burman informed that are dealing in handloom and textile items made by the group’s members.

“We hope to do well at this expo in three days, just like we have in previous years.” Burman added.

In response to a question, Hasina Begum, president of the Asharikandi Self-Help Group, stated that their main business is Asharikandi terracotta products and homemade food items like pitha, ladu, and other items that people typically eat during the Bhogali Bihu in Assam. They also reported doing brisk business on the first day of the fair.
