DOOMDOOMA: The biennial conference of Doomdooma Senior Citizens’ Association (DSCA) held at Doomdooma Natyamandir Mandir on Sunday got underway in the morning with hoisting of flag by its President Govinda Phookan. It was followed by Smriti Tarpan initiated by Working President Lalit Gogoi, Vice-President Dharmeswar Bora, and the Secretary Prakash Narayan Patowari.
The delegate session held thereafter under the Presidency of Govinda Phookan passed unanimously the Secretarial report along with audited account presented by Secretary Prakash Narayan Patowari and elected a new executive committee with Govinda Phookan as President, Lalit Gogoi as Working President, Dharmeswar Bora and Bimala Baruah as vice-presidents, Prakash Narayan Patowari as Secretary, Rubul Kalita as Treasurer, Pradip Baishya and Nirala Chaudhury as assistant secretaries and Khanin Phookan as Organising Secretary.
The open session held in the afternoon with president Govinda Phookan in the chair was formally inaugurated by Nandeswar Kalita, an ex-tea garden executive. He spoke on the theme ‘Senior Citizens are also resources of the country’ and suggested some remedial measures to overcome various problems faced by the senior citizens.
Attending the open session as chief speaker, Prasanna Kumar Barthakur, the Chief Secretary, Assam Senior Citizens’ Association (ASCA), narrated various steps taken by ASCA for the benefit of the senior citizens.
The meeting was also addressed by ASCA Secretary (Education) Malashree Laskar Bora from Guwahati, ASCA, Tinsukia District Committee representative Dr Hari Narayan Barkataki, senior journalist Amulya Khataniar, and President, Tinsukia District Senior Citizens’ Association Thaneswar Das.
The significant aspect of the biennial conference was felicitation of some octogenarian citizens in the meeting, namely Bina Rani Gowala, Nandeswar Kalita, Arjun Baruah, Jogendra Nath Baruah, Ananta Khataniar, and Gayatri Goswami. However, six other such senior persons invited for felicitation could not turn up due to health reasons.
A souvenir ‘Astarag,’ published on the occasion under the editorship of Prakash Narayan Patowari, was released by retired teacher and social worker Giridhar Nanda.
