GUWAHATI: A political showdown is brewing in Assam, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asserting that national-level security issues related to Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife, Elizabeth Colbourn, will be taken up by the state cabinet. CM Sarma has alleged that Colbourn has links with the Pakistani government as well as George Soros' Open Society, and the matter is under investigation for possible threats to national interests.

On X (formerly Twitter), the Assam CM said, "On February 16, the Assam Cabinet will deliberate on whether the recent revelations concerning an MP from Assam have any implications for national security." He emphasized the need for an objective and thorough assessment of the situation, ensuring that any actions taken would be nonpartisan.

Sarma previously questioned a meeting that Gogoi attended a decade ago with the then Pakistan High Commissioner to India, linking it to his wife's background. He detailed that in 2015, Gogoi, then a first-time MP, was invited to discuss India-Pakistan relations at the Pakistan High Commission, despite not being part of the Parliamentary Committee on External Affairs. CM Sarma noted that this meeting occurred amid India's protests against Pakistani interference in its internal matters.

In response, Gaurav Gogoi dismissed the allegations, asserting that the BJP is fabricating false claims due to a lack of substantive issues. He stated, "The people of India are politically very active and are aware of the lies and confusion being spread by the BJP."
