KHERONI: On the occasion of World Environment Day 2025, amidst the challenges posed by recent floods and adverse weather conditions, the West Karbi Anglong district launched a significant tree plantation drive under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative. This heartfelt campaign saw active participation from schools, government offices, and prominent public representatives, who came together to plant saplings across the district, contributing to the ongoing reforestation efforts.
The initiative, aimed at fostering environmental stewardship, underscores the district’s commitment to restoring its green cover and promoting sustainable practices. Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council chief Dr Tuliram Ronghang led the drive with an inspiring message, urging collective action for a greener future.
“I urge all citizens of Karbi Anglong to reflect on our responsibility towards our Mother Earth. Let’s plant more trees and conserve our natural resources. Every small step counts! Plant a tree. Let’s pledge for a greener tomorrow!” said Dr Ronghang.
The plantation drive not only honoured World Environment Day but also reinforced the community’s resolve to combat environmental challenges through unified efforts. The ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign continues to inspire residents to take meaningful steps towards preserving the region’s natural heritage.
DOOMDOOMA: Under the auspices of Assam Science Society (ASS), Doomdooma Branch and in collaboration with Doomdooma Jatiya Vidyalaya (DJV) and Bir Raghab Moran Government Model (BRMGM) College, World Environment Day (WED) was observed on Thursday at Doomdooma Jatiya Vidyalaya.
The programme got underway with planting of a tree sapling by Dr Amorjit Saikia, Principal, BRMGM College, in the morning. Afterwards, drawing and science quiz competitions were held among the students. In parallel, the students displayed various science models and paintings relevant to World Environment Day.
Thereafter the main meeting to celebrate World Environment Day was held under the presidency of Surbhi Moran, Principal, DJV. The meeting began with the presentation of the theme song of the school performed by the students.
Thereafter, General Secretary, ASS, Doomdooma Branch Dhiren Deka while explaining the objectives of the meeting spoke briefly on the significance of the main theme of WED, ‘Let’s End Plastic Pollution Globally.’
Attending the meeting as chief guest, Dr Kamaleshwar Kalita, Principal, Doomdooma College, delivered an interesting speech on plastic pollution for the benefit of the students.
The event was also attended by Arjun Baruah, Treasurer, ASS, Doomdooma Branch and President, Management Committee, DJV, Utpal Pujari, Joint Secretary of the branch, and life members Dipali Saikia and Arati Sarkar Sonowal. Chief guest Dr Kalita also gave away the prizes to the winners of the quiz and drawing competitions and the meeting ended with the President’s remarks by Surabhi Moran.
NAGAON: To commemorate World Environment Day, the Nagaon district administration, in collaboration with the Kaliabor sub-division and the Nagaon forest department, organized a tree plantation drive at Kamakhya village on Thursday. The event aimed to promote environmental conservation and mitigate human-wildlife conflict in the region. The tree plantation drive was attended by District Commissioner Narendra Kumar Shah, who emphasized the importance of environmental conservation. He noted that the district administration had taken several initiatives to address the growing human-wildlife conflict in the area. The tree plantation drive was expected to provide a new habitat for wildlife and reduce the conflict.
The event was attended by several officials, including the Divisional Forest Officer, Subhash Kadam, Superintendent of Police, Nagaon Swapnanil Deka, and the Sub-Divisional Officer of Kaliabor. The tree plantation drive was supported by local residents, social workers, and volunteers.
To raise awareness about environmental conservation, the Nagaon Cultural Affairs Department, in collaboration with the Environment and Forest Department, organized street plays in various parts of the district including Samaguri, Rupahihat, Dhing, Batadroba, Raha, and Barhampur. The plays, performed by local theater groups, highlighted the importance of protecting the environment and conserving natural resources, an official press note added.
GORESWAR: Under the joint initiative of the Assam Science Society and Aryabhatta Science Centre of Goreswar unit, the World Environment Day was observed at Pub Kaurbaha Higher Secondary School with a day-long programme on Thursday. The event began in the morning with the hoisting of the flag by Dimbeswar Rajbongshi, President of the Goreswar unit of Assam Science Society.
Following the inauguration, the tree plantation drive was launched by Chandi Charan Basumatary, Head Teacher of Pub Kaurbaha ME School.
In this connection, drawing and speech competitions were organized among students from three local schools. The topic for the speech competition was “Let’s End Global Plastic Pollution”, coordinated by Surajit Das, Joshnarani Basumatary, and Kandarp Das.
An open meeting and prize distribution ceremony was held under the supervision of Head Teacher Arabinda Deka. The meeting began with a group song by Nikumoni Deka’s team, followed by a welcome address by Biren Chandra Das.
The chief guest, teacher Jogendra Narzary, delivered a speech in Assamese and Bodo emphasizing the need to control plastic pollution. Guest speaker and journalist Abdul Latif Choudhury highlighted the impacts of plastic pollution and called upon the students to plant trees on their birthdays to raise environmental awareness.
The public Health Engineering Department of Baksha division also organized awareness meeting on the theme of Beat-plastic pollution, cleanliness and plantation drive in different nine Development blocks in both Baksha and Tamulpur districts.
