GOLAGHAT: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on his visit to Golaghat on Wednesday, said that the state government shall undertake necessary measures for the conservation and amplification of the Deopahar archeological site in Golaghat district, which was earlier part of the Jarasandha Kingdom in ancient Assam.
CM Sarma visited the site on his way to the International Tourism Mart in Kaziranga and instructed the Golaghat District Commissioner to formulate a DPR for proper conservation and advancement of the site. A committee shall be formed to take care of the conservation and further development initiatives for the site.
The Deopahar site is located approximately 60 km from Kaziranga National Park and is located 250 km away from Guwahati.
CM Sarma stated, “I frequently visit Kaziranga National Park. However, I didn't have the opportunity to visit this archaeological site until now. I was informed about this site. I couldn’t fathom that we possessed such an archaeological treasure.”
The Assam CM also mentioned that the site comprises ancient artifacts of the 8th-9th century stating that, “The artifacts indicate Assam was a prominent geographical region. The site reveals the existence of an advanced civilization. Classical language status has recently been accorded to the Assamese language. Evidence of Assamese language usage from the 12th century is present in the artefacts here.”
CM Sarma expressed confidence in discovering numerous artifacts or historical objects through digging across Deopahar hill stating,” The hill’s development from archaeological and tourism perspectives shall be prioritised. I shall endeavour to announce positive developments shortly.”
He also mentioned that the tourist visiting Kaziranga National Park should surely pay a visit to Deopahar hill and explore its history. The site features numerous ancient remnants, mythological stone sculptures and many more architectural heritage. These artifacts demonstrate magnificent artistry and reflect the spiritual and cultural essence.
