GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has responded to the recent arrest of a Web Portal Journalist in Assam after he tried to cover a story linked to an alleged scam of a cooperative bank.

Digital journalist Dilwar Hussain, who worked for a web portal critical of the incumbent government, was apprehended under a seperate case under the SC/ST Act. However, he was granted bail by the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court.

Much to his despair, Hussain's trouble does not seem to end there as another two or three cases were lodged against him, as a result of which, his chances of not staying behind bars seems unlikely.

Speaking on the matter, CM Sarma accused the journalist of being a businessman and working only as a part-timer in a web portal which is owned by a politician.

The Assam CM also questioned his credibility as a mediaperson and countered by asking whether Dilwar Hussain should be considered as a journalist.

To support his argument, CM Sarma further highlighted that the Assam government has not yet recognised any Digital Media associates as a Journalist.

But, it may be noted that Dilwar Hussain was previously associated with a satellite channel and he is currently serving as the Assistant General Secretary of the Guwahati Press Club.
