SILCHAR: In response to the FIR filed by the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) authority, the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell on Wednesday conducted a surprise raid at the premier institute of southern Assam. Sensing financial irregularities in its Central Laboratory, the SMCH administration last year lodged an FIR with the Cachar Police which was subsequently forwarded to the CM’s Vigilance Cell. A source in the Cachar Police confirmed that the Vigilance Cell investigators had already conducted a surprise raid.

Earlier on July 17, 2024, the SMCH authority suspended six casual workers from the Central Laboratory following the reports filed by the institute’s Deputy Superintendent Dr Hrituraj Thakuria who headed the internal investigation. The suspended workers were Muzibur Rahman Mazhar Bhuiya, Paulong Rongmei, Brahmananda Kurmi, Saumen Ghose, Aziz Sheikh, and Rasu Chandra Das. Apart from them, three employees from the Radiology department were transferred as a punitive measure. The internal investigation revealed that these casual workers were allegedly involved in manipulating lab procedures, facilitating multiple tests for other private laboratories in exchange for money using a single barcode.

Another committee was formed to probe irregularities allegedly committed by the employees of the Radiology department.
