Assam: Day-Long Workshop on Coconut Cultivation Held at KVK Sonitpur

A day long workshop on coconut was organized by the joint association of Coconut Development Board (CDB), Guwahati Region and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sonitpur in KVK, Sonitpur campus.

TEZPUR: A day long workshop on coconut was organized by the joint association of Coconut Development Board (CDB), Guwahati Region and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sonitpur in KVK, Sonitpur campus.

The prime objective of the workshop was to impart knowledge and skill on scientific cultivation of the coconut and its post-harvest management. The programme was initiated with a welcome address by Dr Angana Sarmah, Senior Scientist & Head (I/C), of KVK, Sonitpur. Dr Rajat Kumar Paul, Director, Coconut Development Board (Guwahati region), spoke briefly on scientific coconut cultivation and its improved as well as hybrid varieties.

He appealed to the enthusiastic farmers to take up coconut cultivation as a business venture. Dr Zakir Hussain, SDAO, Sonitpur, interacted with the farmers and spoke on how coconut cultivation can be taken up in larger scales as well as in cluster approach. Another lecture was delivered by Pompy Borah, Programme Assistant, KVK, Sonitpur, on value addition of coconut and how farmers, especially women farmers, can take up value addition of coconut as one of the means for sustainable livelihood.

There are several schemes that have been announced by the Government of India especially to benefit coconut farmers of the country. Mridul Talukdar, Horticulture Assistant, CDB, spoke in detail about these schemes.
