Assam: Dhol badak Bimal Mali passes away in Dhubri district

Renowned Dhol badak (drummer), Bimal Mali passed away at his residence on Tuesday in Gauripur town of Dhubri district.

DHUBRI: Renowned Dhol badak (drummer), Bimal Mali passed away at his residence on Tuesday in Gauripur town of Dhubri district. He was 79 when he breathed his last. Mali was an integral part of the legendary Goalpariya lokageet singer Padmashree Pratima Barua Pandey’s musical team. Mali’s demise sent shockwaves throughout the district, with many mourning the loss of the legendary musician.

According to family sources, Mali had been suffering from various ailments for the past few days and was undergoing treatment at various places.

Mali was long been associated with Padmashree Pratima Barua Pandey since 1977. He had played drum for over 500 songs on radio and television and had also played the dhol for Pandey’s iconic song “Sonar Baran Pakhi”.

After Pandey’s demise, Mali had been coaching and tutoring dhol players at his residence.

Mali had received numerous accolades for his contributions to music, including the Purani Dinor Hawarani Bota in 2003, the Pratima Barua Pandey Bota (award) in 2009, the Bhupen Hazarika Lok Shilpi Sanman in 2011, and the Gadadhar Bota, Sailen Baishya Lok Kala Bota, among others.
