Assam: Double murder of brothers after abduction sparks outrage in Tangla, Udalguri District

In a heart wrenching and shocking turn of events, two young brothers, were found dead after being abducted while on their way to school at Tangla town in Udalguri district on Friday morning.

TANGLA: In a heart wrenching and shocking turn of events, two young brothers, were found dead after being abducted while on their way to school at Tangla town in Udalguri district on Friday morning. The victims identified as  Gaurav Sarma (12) and Kaushik Sarma(10), sons of Mahendra Sarma who works as a driver, were students of class six and five respectively at Kendriya Jatiya Vidyalaya in Tangla in Udalguri district. Their exams were going on and they left their home for the school at around 8:45am on Friday morning. The school is around 200 away from the house and they used to walk to the school. Their mother Geeta Sarma told the media that on Friday, the principal of the school called them enquiring why the kids have not come to the school for the exams prompting the parents for a frantic search and later to lodge a  police complaint with Tangla Police. The minor children’s bodies were discovered in a remote jungle area on the outskirts of Tangla town at Sastrapara village on the banks of Naika river on Saturday morning.  

The brothers were found with their necks slithered with sharp weapons, and injury marks were found on the bodies who were in their school uniforms. The double murder has left the local citizens in disbelief, prompting an outpouring of grief and concern over the safety of children in Tangla town.

According to sources family disputes is suspected to be reason behind the brutal incident though police refused to disclose further details regarding the circumstances of the abduction and the murder of the children. Udalguri Superintendent of Police, Pushkin Jain said, “We are putting every best efforts to crack the case. Police sources have divulged that one Neeraj Sarma who is step brother of the victim have been detained and family dispute is suspected to be reason behind the incident.

“We are heartbroken,” said the boys’ mother, Geeta Sarma in tears. “Our boys were the light of our lives, and we just want to know why this happened and I want capital punishment for the perpetrators. “ she added. “This is an unimaginable tragedy and a shocking crime and we urge the police to bring those responsible to justice,” said Former Rajya Sabha MP and Assam BJP Minority Morcha president Santiuse Kujur.  “I never thought something like this could happen here,” said Ashim Roy a resident. “These kids were just on their way to school. It’s every parent’s worst nightmare. The brutal incident have exposed the hollowness of the tall claims of government and police on improved law and order and security of citizens.” he added.

A road blockade protest was also held in Tangla Chariali demanding immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the gruesome incident wherein activists of All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU), Bir Lachit Sena, AKRSU, AASU staged protest and raised slogans against the government and police administration.

Various organisations and student bodies including Udalguri AGP President Jatin Deka, Udalguri BJP General Secretary Jaykanta Sarma, president of Tangla Media Circle Deepak Deka expressed condolence to the bereaved family members and have exhorted the police administration to throughly investigate the matter and book the perpetrators through due process of law.
