SILCHAR: State’s Education and Tribal Affairs Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu today unveiled the statue of Dimasa Kachari hero and legendary freedom fighter Shambhudhan Phonglo at Assam University. His two cabinet colleagues Kaushik Rai and Nandita Garlosa, Dholai MLA Nihar Ranjan Das, and Vice-Chancellor Prof Rajive Mohan Pant were also present in the programme. Dr Pegu, in his speech, appreciated the Barman Dimasa Kachari Development Council for its special initiative in installing and unveiling the statue of this unsung hero. “Phonglo’s rebellion to reclaim freedom after the British annexation of the Dimasa Kachari Kingdom in 1854 and his dedication to the armed struggle for indigenous rights hold historical significance,” he added.

Dr Pegu later visited the Indian Army Museum and Tribal Hero’s Museum at Assam University, Silchar. He said that the exhibits beautifully showcased the bravery and sacrifices of our soldiers and indigenous warriors.

Dr Pegu, who reached Silchar on Saturday, earlier visited the proposed site for the Guru Charan University’s campus at Chibitabichia near Barsangan in Barkhola constituency. He said that the location’s scenic beauty was truly remarkable, and its excellent connectivity to both Silchar and Hailakandi made it an ideal choice for the university’s expansion.
