SRIBHUMI: A major accident was narrowly avoided late at night on February 18, when a dumper lost control and ended up hanging precariously on a divider near the railing of a bridge at Sribhumi Bypass. The driver escaped unhurt, preventing what could have been a tragic disaster.
Eyewitnesses stated that the accident occurred because thick smoke from a nearby garbage dump made it hard to see. The dump often burns slowly, sending smoke over the area, especially at night, which makes driving dangerous. This is not the first accident caused by the smoke on the bypass.
Local people have often raised concerns about the hazardous conditions. However, authorities have allegedly not taken steps to fix the problem. This has made the public angry, and residents are asking for quick action to stop more accidents.
Meanwhile, a tragic road accident occurred early in the morning of February 17 in Assam's Bajali district, resulting in the death of Padam Bahadur Giri, an Upper Division Clerk (UDC) of the Examination Cell of the Education Department, Government of Sikkim.
Giri was traveling to Guwahati to submit examination answer sheets when the accident took place. The vehicle involved in the incident was registered in Sikkim (SK 01 J 2345). The driver, Rudra Subba, was injured and had been admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Local police secured the answer sheets, which were in their custody. Authorities in Guwahati had been notified, and the Director of the Examination Cell, along with Giri’s family, was en route to Guwahati to manage the required formalities.
