Assam: Father-Son Duo Killed By Speeding Dumper In Hailakandi

Father and son were killed by a dumper on NH-6 in Assam. Locals protested, demanding compensation and action against reckless driving, leading to a blockade that was lifted after assurances were made.

HAILAKANDI: A tragic accident on thursday took the life of a 42-year-old man and his five-year-old son when the duo was struck by a dumper on National Highway 6 in Nishchintapur, Hailakandi district, Assam. The deceased have been identified as Saleh Ahmed Barbhuiya and his son, Danish Ahmed, who was a nursery student at Spring Valley Central School. It happened around noon, about six kilometers from Hailakandi town.

Following the accident, locals apprehended the dumper driver and beat him up. As a protest, the highway was blocked. Police, when they reached the place, were resisted by the mob. Several police personnel were injured.

Various local organisations joined the protest, demanding compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the bereaved family, a government job for a family member, and strong measures against rash driving. Also, they asked for immediate repairs to the national highway.

The blockade was eventually lifted after officials assured the demonstrators regarding compensation. The deceased were taken to SK Roy Civil Hospital in Hailakandi for post-mortem examinations, while the dumper and its driver were taken into custody for legal proceedings.
