Assam: Folk song workshop concludes in Tezpur

5-day folk music workshop in Tezpur ends with zeal, promoting Borgeet, Kamrupia, and Assamese folk traditions among youth.

TEZPUR: A five-day long folk music workshop, focused on Assamese traditional genres such as folk songs, Borgeet, and Kamrupia songs, concluded with grandeur and enthusiasm at the Carmemorial Primary School, Tezpur. The event, jointly organized by Sudarshan Axom and the host institution, aimed to preserve and promote the rich cultural and musical traditions of Assam among the younger generation.

The closing ceremony was marked by vibrant participation from students, teachers, parents, and cultural enthusiasts from different parts of the district. The workshop created a platform for aspiring students to receive hands-on training in classical and folk musical forms that form the soul of Assamese identity.

The event was formally inaugurated by Jitumoni Deba Choudhury, General Secretary of the prestigious Ban Theatre, Tezpur, who appreciated the initiative and emphasized the importance of introducing traditional music to children at a young age. The opening remarks were delivered by Headmistress Ritamoni Baruah, who highlighted the significance of music in holistic education. Other dignitaries present at the occasion included Juri Das and senior Teacher Nripen Das.

Leading the workshop as the chief instructor was renowned folk artiste from Guwahati, Geeta Bhuyan Deka, whose expertise in folk and classical Assamese music brought great value to the training sessions. She was accompanied by cultural activist Khandindra Kumar Deka, who guided students in musical instrumentation, and instrumentalists Babul Das (Dotara) and Utpal Bora, who added depth and authenticity to the live sessions.

The event also saw the presence of eminent academician Dr Manoj Kumar Hazarika, Principal of Tezpur College and President of Sudarshan Axom, along with Alok Sarma, Headmaster of Carmemorial Primary School. Both lauded the commitment of the organizers and trainers for their dedication to cultural preservation.

A large audience comprising students, guardians, and local residents witnessed the event with great enthusiasm. Participants of the workshop showcased what they had learned through live performances of traditional songs. Many attendees expressed their delight at experiencing authentic Assamese folk tunes in such an interactive setting.

In a symbolic gesture of appreciation and encouragement, certificates of participation were distributed to all the trainees who completed the workshop. The ceremony concluded with a musical performance and the formal distribution of certificates, reflecting the workshop’s emphasis on education through cultural engagement.

This initiative is part of a broader movement by Sudarshan Axom to inspire cultural revivalism in the region through community-driven events, and marked yet another milestone in its ongoing efforts to keep the spirit of Assamese musical traditions alive.
