BOKO: Assam Forest Department arrested one poacher from Sukurberiya Reserved Forest area along the Assam-Meghalaya border on Friday. An Assam Forest official Samir Ali said, “We got a tip-off from our source that a group of armed poachers had entered the dense forest area and started poaching in the area. After getting the information, we launched a search operation in the Sukurberiya Reserved Forest area under Rani Forest Range. We set an ambush for them and caught one out of three poachers. After interrogation, we came to know that they came from Meghalaya. The apprehended poacher’s name is Marcus Marbaniyang from Mairang, Meghalaya.”
Samir Ali further said that they found a mobile handset from the poacher and one rifle. “Initially we found some videos from his mobile phone where they were poaching birds in the jungle. However, the two other poachers are absconding,” added Samir Ali. A case has been registered under Section 24, 25 of AFR Act 1891 and Sec 9, 57 of WLP Act, 1972. People of the Rani area appreciated the Forest Department’s action.
Samir Ali said that the poacher was sent to judicial custody and the investigation is on. It is to be mentioned that within two years, two elephants were killed by poachers in Rani and their meat was cut off. However, no one knows how many animals have been killed in the dense forests under Rani Forest range.
