SIVASAGAR: Gargaon College marked its annual college week 2024-25 with a spectacular cultural rally, showcasing the diverse talents of its students and their dedication to preserving Assam’s rich cultural heritage. The rally, a testament to the students’ creativity and commitment, was inaugurated by Tolakhi Senchowa, retired Head of the Department of Physics of Gargaon College. In his address, Senchowa emphasized the vital importance of safeguarding and promoting Assam’s rich cultural legacy in the face of modernization and globalization. He stressed that this legacy is a treasure trove of traditions, languages, and customs, shaped by the state’s diverse ethnic groups, including the Assamese people which needs to be upheld and preserved especially by the young generation. Distinguished academician and Principal of Gargaon College Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta commended the students from various departments for their outstanding efforts in organizing the rally, which beautifully showcased the region’s vibrant cultural diversity.
The colourful rally revolved around diverse themes, showcasing Assam’s rich cultural heritage, including time-honoured Assamese traditions and rituals, the significance of handloom, bamboo, bell metal, and banana plants in the daily life of Assam, different tribes of Assam and the traditional costumes and cuisine of different states of India. The students also creatively depicted significant historical events in Assam’s history, notable literary and cultural personages, the importance of protecting women’s rights and the environment, the mythical demons and ghosts of Assamese folklore among other interesting themes. The cultural rally was judged by Diganta Konwar, Vice-Principal of Gargaon College, Dr Dilip Kumar Deka, Head and Associate Professor of Geography, Dr Meghali Borah, Associate Professor of Commerce, and Mina Robidas, Head of the Department of Sociology.
