KHERONI: The Gauhati High Court’s Criminal Petition (Crl. Pet) number 116/2025, presided over by Justice Mridul Kumar Kalita, has issued a notice in response to a criminal petition filed by Sushil Singh, Lalmohar Singh, and Munmi Devi, resident of Mailoo Basti (Bihari Gaon) under jurisdiction of Kheroni Police Station, West Karbi Anglong district.

The petition challenges an order dated January 18, 2025, by the Judicial Magistrate, First Class, West Karbi Anglong, in PRC Case No. 109/2024, which took cognizance under Section 84 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Section 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.

The petitioners, represented by their counsel Rituparna Bora, argued that no incriminating evidence exists against them under Section 84, and no dowry demands were alleged against Lalmohar Singh (father of Sushil Singh) and Munmi Devi. The court has directed notices to be served to respondents, including Divya Singh of Kheroni Khachari Gaon, with the matter returnable on March 13, 2025.

In a related development, a shocking case of domestic violence has surfaced involving Divya Singh, wife of Sushil Singh, a TET-qualified teacher from Mailoo Basti (Bihari Gaon), married on July 6, 2022. Sources report that Divya has endured repeated physical abuse from her in-laws, particularly her mother-in-law, Girja Devi, and elder sister-in-law, Muni Devi. In the latest incident, Divya was allegedly struck on the head 5–6 times with sticks, requiring 8–10 stitches for scalp injuries. The family is also accused of harassing her over dowry demands and smashing her phone, despite her having a young child.
