GOLAGHAT: The Golaghat district administration has banned the forceful collection of donations across the district following numerous complaints from the local business community about mandatory donation practices by various organizations.

The directive, issued by District Magistrate Pulak Mahanta on Friday, follows growing tensions that led the Assam Chamber of Commerce's Golaghat unit to call for a 12-hour bandh on December 4. However, the protest was called off after the administration intervened.

The order specifically addresses the issue of forced donations for festivals, events, and other gatherings, highlighting concerns over their possible connections to anti-social elements.

“It has come to my attention that there have been instances of forceful demands for donations in the district. Such forceful collection may amount to crimes like extortion or dacoity, and violators would face prosecution under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023," the directive stated.

The decision has been welcomed by the local business community, who view it as a crucial step in safeguarding their interests.

“We welcome this decisive step by the administration. These forceful collections have created an atmosphere of fear among the business community. Many of our members have faced harassment and even assault when unable to meet unreasonable donation demands," the Golaghat unit said.
