HAFLONG: Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya paid floral tribute to the statue of Freedom Fighter Sambudhan Phonglo on his 143rd Martyrs Day today at Haflong. The Governor was accompanied by DHAC CEM Debolal Gorlosa, Minister Nandita Gorlosa, Executive Members, MACs, and others. The Martyr’s Day observance was organized by the Dimasa Students’ Union.
Observing the occasion, hundreds of people from various communities in Haflong paid homage to the national freedom fighter from Dimasa at Haflong today. The day’s programme began with a mass gathering at the statue of Veer Sengya Sambudhan Phonglo followed by its garlanding.
Veer Sambhudhan Phonglo was one of the first Indian freedom fighters who fought against the British colonial power in Northeast India. His rebellion had its beginning in the last part of the 19th century, which also marked the first phase of the freedom movement in North Cachar Hills (present Dima Hasao district of Assam). This period occupies a glorious chapter in the history of the Freedom Movement in Northeast India with Phonglo being the chief architect of this chapter of Dimasa history.
