Assam Health Official Arrested for Bribery, Second Incident in a Week

Manoj Kumar Ghosh, Senior Assistant at Goalpara Health Services office, was arrested for accepting a bribe. This marks the second case in a week involving corruption within Assam’s health department.

GOALPARA: Manoj Kumar Ghosh, a Senior Assistant at the Joint Director of Health Services in Goalpara, Assam, was arrested on January 18, 2025, for asking for and taking a bribe. He reportedly asked for Rs. 15,000 to change the complainant's designation in the FinAssam portal.

The complainant, unwilling to pay, reported the incident to the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, which set up a trap at Ghosh’s office. Following the successful operation, Ghosh was arrested and a case was registered at the ACB Police Station under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018). The investigation is still underway.

This is the second time in a week that health department officials from Goalpara have been questioned by the Assam police. Last week, Dr. Sanjay Choudhury, a CM&HO officer, was questioned by the Chief Minister's Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Cell for his suspected involvement in crimes in the health department.

The ongoing investigation into corruption in the health sector is causing worries about possible wrongdoing in the department.

Meanwhile, earlier, in a setback to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, the Directorate of Enforcement (ED), Bangalore Zonal Office has provisionally attached 142 immovable properties having an approximate market value of Rs 300 crore under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, in connection with the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) scam.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is accused number one in the case and the investigation is also conducted against others who got the illegal allotments done through the MUDA. His wife B.M. Parvathi is the second accused.
