Assam: Hundreds Gather for Karbi Ritual Feast 'Chojun Ameipi' in Pijo Engti Village

A traditional Karbi ritual feast, known as 'Chojun Ameipi,' was held at Longki Engti's residence in Pijo Engti village, Dillai, Karbi Anglong, on February 2.

DIPHU: A traditional Karbi ritual feast, known as 'Chojun Ameipi,' was held at Longki Engti's residence in Pijo Engti village, Dillai, Karbi Anglong, on February 2.

The event was organized to seek blessings from local deities for the well-being of the family. During the ceremony, sacrifices of animals and fowl were offered to the deities Barithe, Sar Arnam, Arni, and Hi-i.

The host invited relatives, friends, and neighbours to join in the community feast, which is held every three years, depending on the host’s capability. Guests were also given raw meat as a gesture of thanks. Over 500 people from nearby villages, along with family and friends, attended the event.

The ritual began with a tribute to the departed family members and was led by priest Longki Engti, assisted by Borva Harlongbi Engti. This solemn event continues to be an important cultural tradition for the Karbi community.

Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has received a proposal to build a greenfield airport in Karbi Anglong, Assam. Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol shared this information in the Rajya Sabha, revealing that the government has approved 21 new greenfield airports, with 12 already operational.

In addition to Karbi Anglong, other proposed greenfield airports include locations in Rajasthan, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and several other states. The government’s Regional Connectivity Scheme (UDAN), launched in 2016, aims to improve regional air connectivity and make air travel more affordable. By January 31, 2025, 619 routes under UDAN will be operational.
