HAMREN: West Karbi Anglong is presently facing intense weather conditions in the form of heavy rain and hailstorms, which have hit daily life quite hard in some of the hilly regions. The remote village of Langhemphi, 32 kilometers from Hamren, the district headquarters, has been hit hardest, along with other areas like Baithalangso and Zerikingding.
Local residents said the continuous hailstorm that lasted for hours has led to a dramatic drop in temperatures with some mountainous regions experiencing sub-zero temperatures. The ice and snow accumulation has rendered major roads impassable, leaving residents stranded and suspending vehicular movement in highland areas.
In Baithalangso, the situation is also critical, with persistent rain having added to the woes of people in lower-altitude regions. The terrain of the region has become more hazardous, making travel and access to basic services even more difficult.
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati has issued warnings indicating that the hailstorm and rainfall may persist for the next 24 to 48 hours, prolonging the crisis. Forecasts are that the state is likely to experience rain for several days, prompting fears of the possibility of continued disruptions and challenges for the communities affected. The local administration is keeping the situation under close observation and is likely to introduce interventions to help the people affected by the severe weather.
