KAZIRANGA: Kaziranga Tiger Reserve (KTR) in Assam begins conservation efforts for the highly endangered black softshell turtle, marking another incredible success story in the field of wildlife conservation.

The KTR has partnered with the TSA Foundation India (TSAFI) to save endangered freshwater turtles. Given that the black softshell turtle, which is native to the Brahmaputra basin, is categorized as a critically endangered species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List, this collaboration comes at a crucial moment.

A combined endeavour was started by the Assam Forest Department and TSAFI to recover the species throughout the north bank terrain of Assam, especially in the Biswanath Wildlife Division of KTR, after it was realized that its future was uncertain. Turtle eggs from the Nagshankar temple in the Biswanath district are being protected and artificially incubated as a major part of this project.

Each year, hundreds of eggs are gathered and carefully incubated to protect them from predators like stray dogs and mongooses. The hatchlings receive neonatal care following a three-month incubation period.
