Assam: Millet feeding pilot project launched in Udalguri

TANGLA: The Millet Feeding Pilot under the Assam Millets Mission have been formally launched on Friday at Adarsha Vidyalaya Mazbat, Orang, Udalguri. The event hosted jointly by Departments of Women and Child Development, Education, Health & Family Welfare, and Agriculture was attended by Udalguri Additional District Commissioner (Education) and in-charge Inspector of Schools, Udalguri, Manojyoti Kutum (ACS). In his speech Kutum emphasized the importance of diet diversity and highlighted the potential of millets as a nutritional powerhouse to combat malnutrition and anemia in children and adolescents.

The pilot initiative, part of the Interdepartmental Initiative on Anaemia Mukta Bharat aims to combat anaemia and improve nutritional outcomes through dietary diversity. Over the next 70–80 days, additional feeding of Finger Millet Sweet Mix and Khichdi Mix will be implemented in 11 schools, benefitting 2,465 children, and in 52 Anganwadis, covering 755 adolescent girls. The programme also focuses on social and behavioural change communication alongside dietary interventions to address anaemia comprehensively. The pilot project seeks to assess the palatability and acceptance of millet-based foods, with a vision to integrate millets into future state nutrition schemes, aligning with the government’s mission to promote healthier dietary habits. The event was also attended by the Deputy Director of Agriculture (P&OS), Anupam Gogoi; District Agricultural Officer, Dipak Medhi; Udalguri Joint Director of Health Services, Dr. Bhubaneswar Swargiary among others.
