DIPHU: In a shocking case in Assam's Karbi Anglong, two minors were nabbed for defrauding local merchants with fake UPI money transfers. The incident occurred on March 30 in Diphu, when some people in the Lorulangso area were victims of the fraudster tactics of the minors.

The modus operandi involved the minors demanding cash in lieu of alleged UPI payments. Birensing Rongpi, one of the victims who runs a packaged bottled water business, shared his experience. Rongpi said the two minors came to him at his selling point and asked Rs. 500 in cash in return for an online payment via UPI transfer.

Sincerely believing the children because of their innocent looks, Rongpi let them scan his payment app. The children assured him the transaction had gone through, so he gave them the money. However, on checking his online banking app after they had left, Rongpi found that no money was sent.

Realizing he had been cheated, Rongpi reported the incident to fellow traders, who disclosed that they had also been tricked by the same minors. Collectively, they were able to trace and capture the culprits. The parents of the children were approached, and the situation was resolved amicably, since the people involved were minors. The police were not involved in the incident, and the dispute was resolved within the community.
