NAGAON: In a significant move, the historic heart of Nagaon town’s Daccapatty area has been renamed “Roopkonwar Chowk” by the district administration. The move comes following directions from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and requests from local residents.

The renaming follows an incident on August 9, when an Assamese youth, Tandeep Kakoty, was assaulted by Anis Rahman in Daccapatty. The altercation began after Kakoty honked at Rahman, who had parked his two-wheeler on the roadside while talking on the phone. Rahman allegedly hit Kakoty with a helmet and was later arrested.

Additionally, the area also has a statue of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, popularly known as the Rupkonwar of Assamese culture. The renaming is being seen as a tribute to him. Now, with this renaming, authorities hope to formally recognise and celebrate the contributions of Agarwala, reverently known as “Roopkonwar”, who was a pioneer in Assamese cinema, literature, and music.

According to Nagaon District Commissioner Devashish Sharma, the decision respects the sentiments of local residents. Prominent organisations celebrate Agarwala’s birthday in the area, making the change culturally significant.

Historically, Daccapatty got its name during the colonial era when people from East Bengal settled in Nagaon. The renaming replaces the colonial-era name with one that reflects Assamese heritage.
