Assam: NSCN/GPRN Slams Coal India, Vows to Defend Tangsa Ancestral Lands in Tinsukia

The group alleges that CIL and its subsidiaries have been “looting” coal and crude oil for decades from the Assam-Arunachal border, especially in Tinsukia and Changlang districts.

TINSUKIA: In a press statement, the Myanmar-based Yung Aung faction of the NSCN/GPRN has launched a scathing attack on Coal India Limited (CIL), accusing the public sector giant of violently attempting to evict Naga villagers and other tribal communities from the Ledo region of Assam’s Tinsukia district.

The group alleges that CIL and its subsidiaries, alongside companies like ONGC and Geo Enpro Petroleum Ltd., have been “looting” coal and crude oil for decades from the Assam-Arunachal border, especially in Tinsukia and Changlang districts.

According to the NSCN/GPRN, these extractive operations have not only devastated the environment but also desecrated the sacred lands of indigenous people — particularly the Tangsa Nagas, whose resistance has gone unheard.

The statement accuses the governments of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh of siding with corporate interests to silence indigenous voices and undermine tribal identity. “This is a direct policy to threaten the identity, culture, and traditional way of life of the indigenous people and reduce them to refugee status in their own homeland,” the group declared.

Affirming their deep-rooted bond with the Tangsa Nagas, the faction declared its full support and warned of potential military action in defense of its people. “Tangsa people are Nagas by flesh and blood. We will protect the interests of our people and respond to their wishes with appropriate military action,” it stated.

The message ends with a powerful vow: “NSCN/GPRN stands firm in our commitment to defend the Naga ancestral land, our natural resources, and our national freedom.”
