GAURISAGAR: The body, of Ranjan Das alias Bupai of Baliaghat Pathalial village on the outskirts of Gaurisagar in Sivasagar district, who went missing while swimming in the historic Gaurisagar Borpukhuri, was recovered yesterday morning. Eyewitnesses reported at Gaurisagar Police Station that the man took off his clothes and, keeping them aside on the west bank of the pond on Wednesday afternoon, went for a swim but drowned.

The SDRF recovered his body on Thursday morning. Later, Gaurisagar Police handed over Ranjan Das’s body to his family after a post-mortem at the Sivasagar Civil Hospital. According to family sources, he had been suffering from depression for a few days. His demise was widely mourned in the Baliaghat area. He left behind his wife, 2 sons, and one daughter.

The ATASU Gaurisagar Regional Committee has repeatedly requested the Central Archaeological Department to erect a concrete fence around the historic pond but to no avail. Bimal Phukan, an activist of ATASU, Sivasagar District Committee, alleged that this pathetic accident has occurred due to the lack of a boundary wall across the 2nd largest pond in Asia dug by humans.
