Haflong: The Government of Assam has set up a one-man inquiry commission to probe the tragic incident at Umrangso mines that claimed four lives, with several others still reported missing. The commission is headed by Justice Anima Hazarika, former judge of the Gauhati High Court, as per a notification issued by the Political (A) Department on January 24, 2025 (Memo No. ECF-606737/3).
According to a public notice issued on April 11, the commission has been tasked with ascertaining the facts, circumstances, and causes leading to the incident. It will also identify individuals or organizations responsible for the alleged illegal rat-hole mining activities in the area and examine possible lapses on the part of concerned authorities.
The commission will further recommend measures to prevent such incidents in the future and address any other relevant matters linked to the tragedy.
A public hearing has been scheduled on April 21, 2025, from 10:30 am to 4 pm at the conference room of the Head of Plant Office Building, NEEPCO, Umrangso, Dima Hasao district. Individuals, organizations, or family members of the victims with relevant information or evidence are invited to appear before the commission on the mentioned date.
