GUWAHATI: In preparation for the upcoming Panchayat Elections in Assam, a directive restricting earned and casual leave for officials involved in election duties has been issued by the Assam State Election Commission (ASEC).
All district and co-district commissioners in the state are instructed by the order, which was issued on April 1, 2025, to refrain from taking leave until the conclusion of the elections unless the commission has given its prior written approval. Preventing any administrative disruptions during the crucial period, this decision aims to ensure a smooth and efficient election process.
The Secretary of ASEC signed the directive, which has been sent to officials across multiple districts, including Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Kamrup, Tinsukia, Jorhat, and Cachar, and also to the co-districts. The commission has emphasized the importance of their presence in managing the election process effectively. This move underscores the government’s commitment to conducting free and fair panchayat elections across the state.
Meanwhile, Karbi people living outside Assam’s Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts have intensified their demand for full-fledged Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, expressing frustration over the government’s inaction.
At a press conference held on Monday in Sonapur, the Karbi Scheduled Tribe Demand Coordination Committee strongly criticized the government for repeatedly neglecting their demand.
