SILCHAR: Claiming themselves as indigenous people of Assam, the Manipuri Muslims, usually known as ‘Pangals’ of Cachar protested the eviction notice served to 60 families belonging to the community in Golaghat. Members of the Manipuri Muslims, in a press meet held in Sonai, claimed that the 60 families facing eviction notices were originally from Cachar district and eventually settled at Uriamghat and Bidyapur in Golaghat in search of jobs. Maintaining that they were not at all against the current eviction drives against suspicious persons illegally occupying reserved forest and government lands in various parts of the state, the Pangals in Cachar urged upon the Chief Minister to ensure rehabilitation to the 60 families now residing in Golaghat. “These Pangal families are original inhabitants of Assam, then how could they be evicted?” asked a member of the community here in Sonai. They sought intervention of the Chief Minister with a plea to either exempt the Pangal families or to rehabilitate them in such a way so that they could manage to earn.
