NAGAON: Dr Farista Yasmin, an Associate Professor in the Department of Botany at Nowgong College, has been felicitated for her outstanding research contributions in the field of lichenology. The Indian Lichenological Society, Lucknow, have selected Dr Yasmin as a Fellow for the year 2024.
Dr Yasmin has discovered two new species of lichens from Assam and has documented 628 species of lichens and 105 species of lichens, including one new recorded from India. Her research has created a new record in the field of lichenology in India.
To felicitate professor Dr Yasmin in this regard, a programme was organized today by the Department of Botany, Nowgong College, where a dozen distinguished guests, including Dr Mukut Goswami, a noted physician and donor of the Dulal Chandra Goswami Memorial Research Award.
Dr Goswami praised Dr Yasmin’s research work and congratulated her on bringing glory to the college and the state. Dr Yasmin’s students, colleagues, and well-wishers attended the ceremony, which was also joined online by several dignitaries, including Dr Sanjiva Nayaka, Chief Scientist, National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow, and Dr Jagannath Vishwakarma, Senior Scientist, University of Bristol.
The ceremony also saw the release of the annual newsletter of the Department of Botany, “Green Leaf.” Additionally, a former student of the department, Deepjyoti Deka, was felicitated for clearing the Combined Assam Public Service Commission examination. Dr Yasmin’s achievement is a testament to her dedication and hard work, and it has inspired her students and colleagues. The college administration has expressed pride in her accomplishment, which has brought recognition to the institution.
