Assam: Senior citizen’s ATM card stolen; Rs 62,000 looted in Nagaon

NAGAON: In a shocking incident, a miscreant stole an ATM card from a senior citizen at an ATM booth, after which Rs 62,000 was looted from his account in Nagaon.

The incident occurred on Friday evening, and the victim, Lakhidrat Hazarika, a resident of Dimaruguri, reported the matter to the Nagaon Itachali Outpost Police. According to Hazarika, his ATM card was stolen by a youth who befriended him near the State Bank of India ATM at Itachali. The youth, who introduced himself as a bank employee, helped Hazarika withdraw Rs 9,000 from his account. After the withdrawal, the youth snatched the ATM card from Hazarika and fled the scene.

 The stolen ATM card was used to withdraw Rs 31,000 from the same ATM, and another Rs 31,000 was withdrawn from a different ATM at Balaji Service Station. The total amount looted from Hazarika’s account is Rs 62,000.

Meanwhile, Nagaon Police have launched an investigation into the matter, but the culprit is yet to be arrested. This incident has raised concerns about the safety of senior citizens and the need for increased security measures to prevent such crimes. It’s worth noting that such incidents are not uncommon in Nagaon, and the police have been urged to take strict measures to prevent such crimes in the area.
