GUWAHATI: A strong storm swept across Assam's Barak Valley late last night, leveling everything in its path. The storm, with hail, wreaked havoc on homes in several areas, including Lala, Katlicherra, and Algapur in Hailakandi district.

Lasting approximately 15-20 minutes, the strong winds uprooted trees and interrupted day-to-day activities, leaving the people scrambling to pick up the pieces.

In a heart-wrenching accident at Budha Sensowa Mising village of Majuli, several cattle were hit and electrocuted by lightning.

The cattle belonged to Bolin Regon, whose living depended solely on them. The heavy rain in the recent past has only added to the troubles of several villagers in the region.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had also issued an alert for thunderstorms and lightning in isolated areas of Assam from March 12 to March 13. The forecast predicted gusty winds gusting to 40-50 kmph and heavy rains in some places, adding to the threat of damage.

As per the latest IMD bulletin, thunderstorms will continue to impact several districts, with scattered heavy showers in isolated areas.

While thunderstorms and lightning can be expected till March 14, wind speed is likely to dip a bit to about 30-40 mph in certain areas. No severe weather warning has been issued after this date.

Authorities have asked citizens to be on guard, especially in areas vulnerable to thunderstorms. The IMD has also warned people to take precautions to avert accidents brought about by unexpected and severe weather.
