DIBRUGARH: In a significant step towards ensuring child-friendly hygiene and sanitation facilities for educational institutions in remote areas of Assam, Sunbird Trust, with financial support from NTT DATA, a global leader in digital business and IT services, has enhanced sanitation facilities in schools on Majuli Island.

The collaboration has led to the construction of restroom facilities at Berbhanga Friendship School in Dhemaji district and Ecoland Academy on Majuli Island, ensuring safe and hygienic restroom access for over 180 students and 24 staff members yearly.

Prior to this initiative, students relied on makeshift washroom facilities built from tin sheets and bamboo partitions, which offered minimal privacy and limited hygiene standards.  These temporary structures posed health risks and created challenges, especially for girls, impacting attendance and well-being. The newly constructed sanitation blocks, made of brick with stable roofing and plumbing, address these issues by offering clean,  private, and accessible restroom facilities for the school community.

Inauguration ceremonies held on schools’ grounds celebrated the completion of the project, with  Reedeep Jack Doley, External Affairs Secretary, All Mising Students’ Union and  Biren Hazarika, School Management Development Committee, Vice President attending as chief guests and emphasizing the importance of sanitation for student health and community well-being.

Teachers, students, and local dignitaries were in attendance, and students added a festive touch with vibrant cultural performances of traditional dances and songs.

“Access to quality education and healthcare can have a profound impact on young lives, especially in remote communities like Majuli Island. Through this partnership with Sunbird Trust, we hope to contribute towards creating safe and hygienic school environments, helping young minds focus on their learning and growth. Quality education access remains a key focus for NTT DATA, guided by the belief that every child deserves the chance to build a brighter future,” said Gauri Bahulkar, Senior Director Global Corporate Social Responsibility, at NTT DATA.
