SILCHAR: In a horrifying incident, two wardens of Sribhumi District Jail have been arrested for allegedly gang-raping a mentally challenged woman late Friday night. The incident took place in an abandoned and dilapidated jail quarter within the jail complex.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Pranab Jyoti Kalita confirmed the incident during a press briefing on Saturday. He stated that the accused, identified as Gajendra Kalita and Hareswar Kalita, were arrested on the spot by the police.
According to sources, the victim is a mentally challenged woman in her early forties who had been living on the streets. She was reportedly dragged into the abandoned quarter, which is surrounded by overgrown bushes and in a rundown condition, where the two wardens committed the heinous crime.
Other jail staff who witnessed the incident immediately informed the police. A team from the district police arrived at the scene around 1:30 am and apprehended the two wardens while they were allegedly committing the act. The jail superintendent also reached the site shortly after the police.
Both accused wardens were on duty at the time and are currently being interrogated, ASP Kalita added.
