BOKAKHAT: Near Babathan in Numaligarh, a herd of wild elephants blocked National Highway 39 on Monday morning, halting all transportation. For about an hour, traffic came to a complete standstill as the elephants roamed the road. Leading the herd was an elephant fitted with a GPS collar. A similar incident occurred on Sunday when elephants blocked a road within the Numaligarh Tea Estate.
On Monday, forest department officials were deployed to monitor the situation along the highway. If the increasingly aggressive elephant herd cannot be brought under control, it could lead to a severe crisis. Workers in the Numaligarh Tea Estate are now in distress, unable to carry out their duties safely.
Most elephant corridors in the outskirts of Numaligarh have become obstructed. In addition to the tea estates, large buildings have sprung up in various places, further shrinking the elephants’ natural habitat. In search of food, herds are now being forced to enter human settlements.
