BOKAKHAT: World Turtle Day was celebrated in Kaziranga. Organized by Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve in collaboration with the Nagshankar Temple Management Committee and TSAFI, the event aimed to highlight Assam’s cultural and ecological role in turtle conservation. The gathering was held at the Nagshankar Temple Guest House with participation from local students.
According to park authorities, this year’s World Turtle Day theme called upon people around the world to respect and protect one of nature’s most ancient and gentle creatures. The theme encouraged not only awareness but also the celebration of turtles’ resilience, beauty, and essential role in ecosystems.
A press release noted that Kaziranga National Park and the Tiger Reserve provide a complex habitat for turtles. Of the 21 species found in Northeast India, 17 are found in Kaziranga, including the critically endangered black soft-shell turtle.
As part of the day’s celebration, the Nagshankar Temple Committee was recognized for its spiritual stewardship and environmental leadership. Their conservation partnership has successfully rehabilitated more than 600 turtles. With support from Kaziranga authorities and civil society, efforts are underway to safeguard and conserve turtle eggs in the temple pond. These eggs are hatched artificially, and the hatchlings are released into the wild. So far, 486 hatchlings of the black soft-shell turtle have been released from this pond.
