GUWAHATI: A team from Gauhati University represented Assam at the prestigious Global WordNet Conference in Italy, highlighting the significance of Assamese and Bodo languages on the international stage. This achievement is expected to boost digital inclusion efforts for both languages.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the team for their great achievement and said it was a proud moment for Assam.
Meanwhile, earlier last week, CM Sarma thanked Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat for helping the Assamese language gain the status of a classical language. Speaking at an event on Friday, he also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supporting Assam's development.
"Shekhawat ji (Gajendra Singh Shekhawat) played a big role in two major developments for Assam... Charaideo Maidam was granted the status of UNESCO World Heritage site because of his efforts and representation. I thank PM Narendra Modi and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on behalf of all the people of Assam... He played a key role in granting the designation of classical language to the Assamese language. The Culture Ministry also plays a role in giving classical language status to a language," Himanta said.
In October 2024, the Union Cabinet approved the conferment of classical language status to Assamese, Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, and Bengali. Prime Minister Modi praised the decision, highlighting the rich contributions of these languages.
