SILCHAR: The second makeshift bamboo bridge on Harang river was washed away by heavy rain on Wednesday early morning. This was the second bamboo bridge on the river to collapse near Bhangarpar in Borkhola. Agitated local residents came out on the street shouting slogans against Minister Krishnendu Paul who is in-charge of PWD Road (Rural).
More than two weeks back, the newly-renovated concrete bridge on Harang river that connects Silchar and other parts of the Barak Valley with the National Highway leading to Meghalaya had collapsed. Two overloaded trucks carrying limestone also plunged into the river along with the bridge. The Barak Valley Development Department Minister Kaushik Rai after visiting the site assured that a bailey bridge would be erected on the Harang river within 20 days. But the machinery and parts of the bailey bridge were yet to arrive as the vehicles carrying those were reportedly struck in the landslide-hit Haflong-Silchar road. On a temporary basis, two bamboo bridges were erected but they could not resist heavy showers.
Meanwhile, prices of vegetables, which are mainly transported to Barak Valley from the middle and lower Assam, skyrocketed in Silchar. Despite a strict order from the government to maintain the rates fixed by the district administration, prices in the open markets were excessively high. Significantly, no action from the administration could be noticed.
