DOOMDOOMA: The biennial conference of Doomdooma Satadol Sakha Xahitya Xabha (DSSXX) was held with a day-long programme at its venue today. The programme got underway with hoisting of the flag by President Bimala Baruah in the morning. It was followed by a special tribute in memory of the departed Presidents and the Secretaries by Vice-President Jaysurya Bora and Smriti Tarpan by Secretary Deben Deka.
The subject committee meeting was held thereafter with President Bimala Baruah in the chair. Secretary Deben Deka read out the Secretarial Report before the house along with an audited account which was duly passed by the house. A new 21-member executive committee was elected with Deben Deka as President, Tridip Deka as Vice-President, Nityananda Das as Secretary, Kuladhar Barman as Office Secretary, Subhasish Mallick as Treasurer, and Maushumi Patowari as magazine editor.
In the afternoon, the open session was held under the Presidentship of Bimala Baruah. Secretary Deben Deka explained the objectives of the meeting. Dr Kamleswar Kalita, Principal, Doomdooma College, spoke on the subject ‘The dignity of classical language and our duty’ as the invited speaker. He explained the formation and development of the Assamese language and cautioned that we all must love our language and learn to practice it. Above all, the new generation as well as those whose mother tongue is not Assamese must be encouraged to feel inclined towards learning the Assamese language, he said. A souvenir was also published on the occasion under the editorship of Dwijen Sarma. Senior journalist Amulya Khataniar inaugurated the souvenir.
Two persons were offered special felicitation in the meeting. They are former President, Tinsukia Zila Xahitya Xabha Arjun Baruah and senior journalist Manoj Dutta for receiving the Special Award of Asamiya Pratidin Achiever’s Award, 2024.
Besides them, special felicitation was offered to poet Golok Deka, former Secretary Prafulla Mahanta, Hitoishi member applicant and senior journalist Dhiren Deka and former Principal, Hoonlal HS School Jhikananda Borgohain.
The winners of speech competition and Assamese spelling competition, held among the school library, were given away the prizes in the meeting. The meeting came to an end after the President’s remarks given by President Bimala Baruah.
