Bodoland Handloom Mission hosts youth awareness workshop at Kokrajhar Government College

KOKRAJHAR: A youth awareness workshop under the Bodoland Handloom Mission was held at Kokrajhar Government College. The initiative, aimed at sensitizing young students to the cultural and economic significance of handloom, was jointly organized by the Department of Handloom and Textiles, BTC, and Kokrajhar Government College.   

BTC Executive Member of Handloom and Textile, Dhananjay Basumatary, attended the programme as the chief guest, where he underlined the importance of connecting the youth with traditional weaving practices and exploring innovative pathways for entrepreneurship in the handloom industry.

Speaking on the occasion, Basumatary emphasized, “Our heritage is woven into the threads of handloom. It is not just an art form but a sustainable livelihood that has supported generations. Through this workshop, we hope to inspire the younger generation to take pride in this legacy and reimagine it for the future.”

The event focused on raising awareness about the cultural richness of Bodo handloom traditions, showcasing their relevance in today’s fashion and lifestyle markets, and encouraging youth to consider careers in textile design, weaving, and handloom-based enterprises.     

Kokrajhar District Commissioner Masanda M. Pertin highlighted the government’s commitment to reviving and promoting traditional industries in the region and stressed the importance of youth-led initiatives in sustaining the handloom sector.

The programme was attended by BTC Joint Secretary Raktim Barugohain, Principal of Kokrajhar Government College Dr D.D. Mwchahary, and CHD Handloom, Hiranya Devi, along with senior faculty members and students.
